Earl Ferrers has died

The 13th Earl Ferrers, Robert Shirley, has died aged 83. His ancestor was the last peer to be hanged, and it's also the name of my local pub in Streatham.

One of the reasons I like this pub

Lord Ferrers killed Mr Johnson, his land-steward, was tried, condemned for murder and hanged at Tyburn on 5 May 1760. He is the last British peer to die a felons death.

The New Statesman has an obituary article on Robert Shirley, here, and the Daily Telegraph has one here.
